Public Engagement

As a team of enthusiastic students, we enjoy introducing the public to the marvels of science! Read below to see how iGEM Leiden 2022 introduces the public to the spectacular world of science around us.



Museum Night Leiden
This is one of the most popular events in Leiden, and our iGEM team had a chance to be a part of it! People had the opportunity to learn about what microorganism is responsible for cheese formation, yogurt production, and Kombucha. We also gave people the chance to see what eukaryotic cells look like under a microscope by using a cheek swab to view their own cells!

Leiden Science Family day
We had an opportunity to join the Leiden Science Faculty and introduce people of all ages to the exciting field of science. Here, we introduced people to the microbial world around us and how we can use fluorescent bacteria to create beautiful and colourful art. Also, a plasmid puzzle was designed by one of our team members to show individuals how we can mutate bacterial cells for our benefit. Indeed, people were intrigued by this hidden microscopic world and its wonders!


Hortus Botanicus Midsummer Night
We worked closely with Hortus Botanicus to educate people about plant biology. We mainly focused on how mutagenesis with plant cells has evolved overtime, from a random process to a more targeted approach. One of our more popular activities was designing a paper flower with different features. With this, we educated people about phenotypes, genes, and mendelian genetics.


Leiden Beer Festival
This was an excellent opportunity to show the public that science is used to produce some of their drinks! We grouped together with Leiden City of Science to show how yeast is used for beer production and the science behind beer production.

Human practices
Of course, our project does not stand on its own and should be put in a larger framework. To have a better idea of the impact our project will have and the societal structure it lives in, we have talked to some stakeholders. These stakeholders are subdivided in a couple of categories: businesses, researchers, governmental and the medical field.

Businesses
To have a better idea of the state of the nanoparticle market, we have talked with a couple of companies that work with nanoparticles. They were able to aid us with a better idea of the available nanoparticles on the market and what the possibilities are for testing and characterizing our nanoparticles.

Medical field
Within the medical field there are different groups of stakeholders. We are currently in the works of getting input from (ex)patients who have undergone treatment for Head and Neck cancer. Supporting patient experiences, we also are reaching out to oncologists and dermatologists.

Government
Within the governmental/legislative aspect of our project there are also a number of stakeholders. We have been in contact with the RIVM, the Dutch Institute for Public Health and the Environment, about how to safely work with GMOs, nanoparticles, and metals. We have also reached out to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) about the regulatory requirements for the nanoparticles we are producing.

Researchers
We also had some contact with other researchers, both to aid in our experimental set up as well as to get a better idea of the current research on nanoparticles and heat-mediated therapies.
